I was nearly two years old when we left the Soviet Union. Two years later, we returned to a country that had—almost overnight—become the Russian Federation. I always felt outside of language—and in England, Russian, and the states—and I repeated the first grade three times. Instability of land, instability of language was the only constant.

Today, I have taught writing in classroom, corporate, and university spaces for over a decade. I have published in nearly 20 national literary journals, won awards, and co-founded an international literary magazine. I have accompanied writers from the anxiety of a first draft—or no draft at all—to a sense of accomplishment in their work and a confidence in their process.

In my work, I found that good writing depends far more on what happens off the page than what happens on it. In other words, the quality of writing environment determines the quality of your writing.
